The First Presbyterian Church of Whitestone centers its life in worship each Sunday at 11:00 A.M. All of our other activities find their basis in this time of praise, prayer, and proclamation.
As Presbyterians, our worship is rooted in the Reformed tradition, but it is not just traditional! Our worship is shaped by the practice of the church over the centuries while also being vibrant and engaging for the world of today.
Worship at FPCW is centered around the Word of God proclaimed in the sermon, with five movements:
- Gathering Around the Word: Setting this time of gathering apart from the world with praise and prayer
- Proclaiming the Word: Reading scripture and proclaiming the Word in sermon
- Responding to the Word: Beginning to live out the call of the Word by affirming our faith, offering prayers for our world and ourselves, and offering our gifts to God
- Sealing the Word: Setting the Word upon our hearts and our lives through the sacraments of the Lord's Supper (monthly, on the first Sunday of each month) and Baptism (on occasion)
- Bearing and Following the Word into the World: Beginning the journey back out into the world by carrying the Word along with us
The scripture readings for each week are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary. This coming week's readings are shown below, or you can listen to them on the PCUSA's "Hear the Word" podcast.
Music for the service is generally chosen to complement the scripture readings and draws on a variety of resources, including traditional hymns, sung psalms, contemporary songs, and music from around the world.
